Fused Dichroic Glass
Dichroic glass has more than one color when it is viewed from different angles. It is made of layers of metallic oxides such as titanium, silicon and magnesium baked on the glass surface in a high temperature furnace, several coats are used to achieve various colors. Colors of the glass change as you look at it. Each piece has a transmitted color that is different than the reflected color. A third color is produced when you look at it from a 45 degree angle.
The technology to create Dichroic glass was developed in Germany over 100 years ago, however, it has been just recently that it became popular in jewelry making.
Jewelry pieces are hand cut and layered in designs and than fired in a kiln, annealed and fire polished. Each piece is a one of a kind. Colors and shapes may change during firing so even the artist is not sure what the end result will be.
The true beauty of dichroic glass, with its stunning shimmering and color, and the depth it bestows in its enchanting dimensionality...impressive to the human eye, but so elusive to the eye of the camera.
So bear in mind, as you gaze upon the unique artworks in molten glass, that whatever color your eyes perceive is nothing compared with the true beauty of these wearable works of Art!
